pool ready for summer

How to Prepare for Summer with a New Pool

As summer approaches, there’s nothing quite like enjoying the warm weather with a refreshing swim in your very own pool. Whether you’re installing a brand-new pool or getting your existing one ready for the season, proper maintenance and care are key to ensuring a clean, safe, and enjoyable swimming environment.

Here’s how to prepare your pool for the sunny months ahead:

Clean Your Pool Thoroughly

Before diving in, make sure your pool is sparkling clean. This means checking for debris, leaves, and dirt that may have accumulated over the cooler months. Use a pool net to remove visible debris from the water’s surface and a pool brush to scrub the sides and bottom of the pool. If your pool has a filter, maintain it according to its type: DE filters can be backwashed or the filter grids cleaned, cartridge filters require cleaning their cartridges, and sand filters can only be backwashed. Keeping your filter system clean and free from dirt and contaminants is essential for maintaining water quality.

Signs your pool filter needs cleaning:

  • Cloudy or murky pool water
  • Increased water flow resistance
    • The pressure gauge is the little dial that is on top of the filter. It reads the amount of pressure building inside of the filter. If the pressure is higher than normal, the filter most likely needs to be either cleaned or backwashed because the water isn’t flowing through like it should.
  • Visible debris floating in the water
  • Slower water circulation

Check and Adjust the Water Chemistry

Maintaining proper water chemistry is crucial for keeping your pool water clean, clear, and safe to swim in. Test the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels using a pool test kit or strips. The ideal pH range is between 7.2 and 7.8, and alkalinity should fall between 80-120 ppm. If the levels are off, you may need to add chemicals to balance the water. Pay close attention to chlorine levels to prevent algae growth and bacteria from thriving.

Inspect the Pool Equipment

Your pool’s equipment such as the pump, filter, and heater, need to be in top condition for efficient operation. Inspect all equipment for damage or wear and tear that may have occurred over the off-season. Make sure the pump is working properly, and check that all hoses and connections are secure. If you notice any issues, consider hiring a professional to inspect and repair the equipment.

Regular Pool Maintenance Schedule

To keep your pool in great shape throughout the summer, it’s important to set up a regular maintenance routine. This includes cleaning the pool, testing the water chemistry, and running the filtration system consistently.

We recommend running your pool pump for 8–12 hours daily to maintain optimal water circulation and cleanliness. During the summer months, aim for closer to 12 hours per day to handle increased usage and higher temperatures. In the winter months, 8 hours daily is sufficient to keep your pool in great condition. Regular maintenance will help prevent the buildup of algae, bacteria, and other harmful contaminants that could affect your swimming experience.

Safety Measures

Don’t forget to review your pool safety features, such as pool covers, fences, alarms, and ladders. Ensure that all safety equipment is functioning properly and that your pool is secure for swimmers of all ages. A well-maintained pool also means a safer environment for everyone.
